House of Death 1939-1955. News of a Resurrected Memory

We cordially invite You to the International Conference „World War II Prisoners in the Nazi and Soviet Camps in 1939–1948“ and to the Victims Commemoration Ceremony, which will be held on 14–15 May 2015.

The Conference will be organised in Lithuanian city Šilutė, nearby the village of Macikai, where the Nazi, later the Soviet prisoner-of-war camps and GULAG section operated in 1939–1955. Representatives of various nations were imprisoned there – the Poles, Belgians, Americans, French, Brits, Lithuanians, Russians, Germans etc. This is a unique memorial place attesting to the cruelty and inhuman nature of both Nazi and Soviet atrocities. Many victims of the totalitarian regime died there from the torture they experienced and were buried nearby.

In the Conference, researchers from Austria, Czech Republic, Denmark, France, Germany, Great Britain, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania and Poland will present their works. Conference languages: Lithuanian and English.

At the end of the Conference the participants will be invited to commemorate the victims – on the territory of the former Macikai camp the magnolia tree will be planted and decorated with national ribbons of the European countries.

These events are organised by the Genocide and Resistance Research Centre of Lithuania, Šilutė District Municipality Administration, Šilutė Museum, Šilutė Branch of the Association of Poles in Lithuania, Šilutė First Gymnasium, Šilutė Vydūnas Gymnasium, Macikai Social Care Home.
